Paris by Hoops
Many people think of food, fashion, and yes, football (soccer) when they think of France and associate a weekend in Paris with glamor, gossamer dreams, and macaroons. Others think of the “new Paris” that features La FrenchTech and Parisian-style hipsters along the Canal St. Martin in the 10ème. For over a century, all “good Americans” have had their own versions of the City of Light, but “my Paris” has long been sports-centric. Given the building anticipation of the NBA’s January 2020 match in the French capital, a quick 48-hours en ville by basketball illustrates different aspects of the city that you likely never thought of.
Spotlight on Basketball Diplomacy: NBA-China Edition
Last week’s “events” involving the NBA and China, ignited after Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey tweeted his support for the Hong Kong protestors, thrust basketball diplomacy onto center stage. But omitted in all of the coverage analysis is that no one should be surprised that the Chinese government would take a stand when politics and international basketball intersected.
#WorldGotGame
If you haven’t followed the FIBA World Cup in China this month, you’ve missed out on some great games. That’s because competition has tightened significantly, somethingI France captain Nicolas Batum articulated to me at the start of Les Bleus’ training camp.
Marine Johannès' Rêve Américain
“If you talk to Marine, you have to get close to her because when she speaks she’s very quiet,” Batum told me of his hometown basketball “sister” Marine Johannès, the WNBA’s 13th French player who is living her American dream this summer.
Can Hoops Diplomacy Take-Over Africa?
That’s a bit of a provocative question, but one that lent itself well to a workshop I co-directed with Dr. J Simon Rofe last week at the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy, SOAS University of London.
Why France Still "Won" World Cup 2019
The aftermath was bitter. While only one team won yesterday’s quarter-final showdown on the field (that would be the USWNT), France and Les Bleues won this tournament in another way.
How Do They Make Les Bleues?
A lot has changed since the early 2000s when the first wave of female footballers emerged from Clairefontaine, among them legendary icons Laura Georges, Louisa Nécib (Cadamuro), Camille Abily, and Amandine Henry. So: what does the Pôle France Féminin du football look like today?
What Happens When A Legend Returns?
Earlier this week I caught up with France’s magician of the midfield, Louisa Nécib-Cadamuro.
The Culture Behind the Game
I attended the Japan-Argentina match at Paris’ Parc de Princes. Then I learned “How the Argentina women’s team overcame their own federation to win their first ever World Cup point.”
Living the Rhythm of FIFA World Cup 2019
The France World Cup 2019 kicked off with a dominant performance by the hosts, Les Bleues, a start to their campaign to extend the feel-good vibes from last summer’s victorious Russia World Cup 2018. And after a sprint to the airport, I was there among the more than 45,000 spectators at Parc de Princes to help launch the biggest event in women’s football.
